Jamaican born and Toronto raised, KG Russell is an unsung journeyman who followed the DIY path with his compelling output. Only a handful of collectors have been aware of the few releases via his private imprint Rain Sound - of which little information is known and copies very seldom seen. A striking stand-out of Russell’s work comes via his Dance With Me album - a self-produced jewel originally recorded in 1988 with help from friends Tony Cameron and Orville Malcom on session duties. The brilliant blender of synth-soaked soul was released in 1990 on cassette only. Roughly 200 copies were manufactured and personally handed out to local record stores around Toronto. Crown Ruler returns, plucking out three superior cuts for Last Dance and breathing new life into each via an impressive remastering effort from Melbourne sound wizard Daniel Elleson. Finally pressed to wax, this EP is clearly deserving of 12” treatment. An island-tipped-electro-come-proto-house string of melters, guaranteed to prick the ears of lovers of the obscure and exotic.
Awo Ojiji debuts on Control Freak for the long awaited return of their White Label series with his ‘Solidify EP’ - four percussive, wonky & propulsive club cuts, com-plete with a remix from label heads Finnaman and Customer Service.
Man of moment Fred P plus Sound Signature's Specter & Madrid's Jose Rico on Mother Tongue's Yellow Jackets series.
Classic 2010 release from LA producer/ Brainfeeder man. Timeless, jazz & hip hop-influenced electronica.
WRWTFWW Records and MEG Museum (Geneva) present the first new solo album by renowned Japanese percussionist Midori Takada in 23 years. Recorded in a live setting and played with instruments conserved in the collections of the MEG Museum, Cutting Branches For A Temporary Shelter is Midori Takada’s very own rendition of "Nhemamusasa", a traditional work emblematic of the musical repertoire for mbira of the Shona of Zimbabwe, known worldwide, thanks to its version by Paul F. Berliner included on the 1973 album The Soul of Mbira.350gsm sleeve, with OBI, and liner notes.
Originally self-released on cassette in late 2020, the 13-track collection came from an unstable few years for the artist, during which she found solace in the night-time atmosphere of the various Tokyo wards that became her home. With her musical alias a fun play on words meaning 'metro rider', Evenings is a seamless and insular night-time journey from Metoronori, real name Hikari Okuyama. The journey though isn't charting train tunnels and rail tracks, but various dreamscapes, as underpinned by electronics and hints of free jazz. While musical influences are hard to pin down for a sound so singular, Evenings comes with visual inspiration from esteemed masters of cinema. Songs like the title track and "窓辺の顔 (Face at the Window)" evoke the night-time atmospheres of Michelangelo Antonioni and Kiyoshi Kurosawa. "屋根の上より (From the Rooftop)" meanwhile was inspired by the city nightscapes of Fritz Lang. Surrealism and noir bleed through the sounds, making for the visual texture of an out-of-context movie scene, much like part of a dream.
